Chicago Race Riot Commemoration Project Guest Discussion

Northside Friends’ Second Hour on Sunday February 16, starting at noon, will feature a project to create commemorative markers for the 38 people who died during the riots in 1919 that broke out in Chicago when 17 year-old Eugene Williams drowned after being hit by a stone and the police refused to arrest the man that threw it. Hundreds were injured, thousands lost their homes. These markers will be placed on the streets of Chicago where people died. Dr. Peter Cole and Dr. Franklin Cosey-Gay, co-chairs of the 1919 Chicago Race Riot Commemoration Project, or CRR19, will share with us about their project. Worship sharing-style discussion will follow. There will also be an exhibit of student photomontages related to the project. See the recent article about CRR19 in the South Side Weekly written by two of Dr. Cosey-Gay’s students: https://southsideweekly.com/scenes-from-history-photovoice-oral-history-1919/. You can RSVP for the event on Facebook at  https://www.facebook.com/events/468702797128021/.
